May is both Maternal Mental Health Month and the month we celebrate Mother’s Day, making it the perfect time to spotlight something often overlooked: the emotional and mental well-being of mothers.

Motherhood can be filled with joy, love, and deep meaning—but it can also bring stress, identity shifts, exhaustion, and loneliness. Whether you’re navigating early motherhood or have been on this journey for years, your mental health is just as important as your family’s needs. And if you're supporting a mom in your life, your understanding and compassion can make all the difference.

🧠 What Is Maternal Mental Health?

Maternal mental health refers to the emotional and psychological well-being of women during pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond. It's not just about postpartum depression (though that’s important, too)—it includes anxiety, burnout, overwhelm, identity shifts, and the extensive mental load that comes with caregiving.

Studies show that 1 in 5Ā women experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder, and many go untreated due to stigma, lack of support, or feeling like they ā€œshould just power through". But here’s the truth:

✨ You can love your children and still struggle. ✨ You deserve to thrive, not just survive. ✨ You are more than a caretaker—you are a whole person.

šŸ’¬ Signs You Might Be Struggling (Even If You Don’t Realize It)

  • You feel emotionally numb or disconnected

  • You’re overwhelmed by small tasks

  • You have trouble sleeping, even when the baby/kids sleep

  • You feel persistent guilt or like you're ā€œnot doing enoughā€

  • You’re withdrawing from things or people you used to enjoy

  • You can’t remember the last time you felt like yourself

If any of this resonates, know you’re not alone—and help is available. Whether it’s through therapy, medication, support groups, or honest conversations, there is no shame in asking for support.

Moms, Your Well-Being Matters—You Deserve the Care You Give Others

Mental wellness in motherhood isn’t about doing it all or always having it together—it’s about recognizing your own needs and giving yourself the care you so freely give to others. This month, take a moment to check in with yourself. Ready to reflect? Take our Wellness AssessmentĀ to explore how you're doing across all areas of your well-being—and discover ways to feel more supported, balanced, and whole. šŸ’—šŸ§

āœˆļø Travel as a Form of Self-Care

Let’s talk about something radical: taking time for yourself—including time away.

Many mothers feel guilt for even thinking about solo time, let alone travel. But distance can be restorative. A weekend away with friends, a solo nature retreat, or even just a day trip somewhere peaceful can help you reconnect with who youĀ are, outside of your role as a caregiver.

Travel encourages: 🌿 Mindfulness – When you're somewhere new, you're more present. šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø Restoration – You get a mental break from the constant to-do list. šŸ’¬ Connection – If traveling with others, it can bring joy, laughter, and adult conversation. šŸ’– Reclamation – It reminds you that you’re still you, and you matter.

It’s not about escaping motherhood. It’s about remembering that you’re still a whole personĀ within it.

Ready to plan a restorative getaway—just for yourself?

šŸ’— How to Support Maternal Mental Health

Whether you're a mom yourself or supporting one, here are a few ways we can collectively hold space for maternal well-being:

  • Listen without judgment

  • Ask real questionsĀ like, ā€œHow are you reallyĀ doing?ā€

  • Encourage rest, therapy, or time away—without guilt

  • Avoid glorifying burnoutĀ (being a ā€œsupermomā€ shouldn’t require self-neglect)

  • Share resources—the right help can change a life

This Maternal Mental Health Month, give yourself the same care and compassion you give so freely to others. You’re doing more than enough—and you are moreĀ than enough.
